I have yet to read the original Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, a Christian bestseller for many years now. However, I now own two other books built off of the original — one with devotions for older kids or a family and this latest one I’ve received.
Jesus Calling: My First Bible Storybook is a padded board book with simply adorable artwork. It covers more Bible stories than you might think one little book could include, which I appreciate. From Creation to Abraham to Esther to several pages on Jesus’ life, this book captures most of the main stories which are foundational for young children or new Christians.
Each page includes a small, cutely-written story like this one:
Thousands of people came to hear Jesus. They listened until their tummies rumbled. But they had no food! One boy gave Jesus his lunch — just five loaves and two fish. Jesus prayed to Father God. A miracle happened! And one little lunch fed all the people.
After the story, there is a small “Jesus Calling” section that is written as if Jesus is speaking:
“I can use you to help others — no matter how old you are!”
Lastly, there is a Bible verse that supports the message of each particular story. It is not necessarily from that story’s original passage. This helps paint the picture that we should read God’s Word as a plenary document and how it all works together. For example, on the page describing the Ten Commandments, the accompanying Bible verse is Psalm 19:7-8:
“The Lord’s teachings are perfect…They make people happy.”
There are lots of toddler Bibles out there, some of which I’ve already reviewed on this blog, and most of which are great! But if you’re looking for a new one, I definitely wouldn’t pass this one up.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
